Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am suffering from long thin worms that started in my anus and now moving all over my body. Scraping worms under my skin, behind my eye, nose, ear, face, and neck. Currently, I am taking the tablet Albendazole. I have done my blood test and sharing reports with you. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen the blood reports attached (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). It shows increased leukocyte counts, including ANC (absolute neutrophil counts), lymphocytes, and monocytes but not eosinophil count, suggesting some acute infection or inflammatory condition. Parasitic helminths or worms usually cause eosinophilia due to allergic responses. A stool examination will be ideal to rule out the primary source of worms if any. I suggest you follow up with a stool routine and culture report. Kindly mention the treatment details taken, particularly about the tablet Albendazole or any other ongoing treatments.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I wanted to say I took the Albendazole tablet, but one doctor said to take two pills today and two a week later because she thought it was pinworms with no tests. The other doctor says to take one pill a day for eight days. Which one is the right way of taking the tablet? I worry about not taking the right amount of medicine. The symptoms have been present since the last week, and I took two pills two days ago. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The tablet Albendazole prescribed dosages vary with the worm identified in the stool examination.

1. For round-worm, pin-worm, whip-worm, and hook-worms, Albendazole is given in 400 mg single dose for adults and children more than two years of age.

2. For the worms like Strongyloides, taeniasis, hymenolepiasis, clonorchiasis, and opisthorchiasis, for the age mentioned above group, a tablet of Albendazole 400 mg is recommended once daily for three days.

3. For giardiasis, for the age mentioned above group, the tablet Albendazole 400 mg is recommended once daily for five days.

Due to the above reasons, drug treatment should be started after a stool examination. However, since you have already taken two doses, taking the third to fifth consecutive day dosage is recommended. Additionally, I suggest you take tablet Ivermectin 12 mg, one tablet once daily for five days. Isapghula husk (dietary fiber) two tablespoonfuls mixed in water or warm milk and consumed at night before sleeping daily for 15 days. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them and take medications with their consent.

Thank you.
