Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 23-year-old female; my weight is 51 kg, and my height is four feet and nine centimeters. I am not under medication. My husband and I had unprotected intercourse, and I took three Yasmin tablets after almost 12 hours of intercourse to prevent pregnancy and took another three tablets after eight hours. I had slight bleeding after taking the first dose. Why is this happening, and does that mean I have zero chance of getting pregnant?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I thoroughly read your query and understand our concern.

Tablet Yasmin (Drospirenone and Ethinyl Estradiol) is a type of medication known as a combined oral contraceptive pill, which contains two hormones that work together to prevent pregnancy. The bleeding you are experiencing after taking the pills is likely breakthrough bleeding, which can occur when starting a new form of hormonal contraception. Breakthrough bleeding can also occur when a woman misses a pill or takes it at a different time than usual. It is important to note that emergency contraceptive pills, such as Yasmin, are not as effective as regular contraceptive pills at preventing pregnancy. The effectiveness of emergency contraceptive pills decreases the longer you wait to take them after intercourse. Additionally, emergency contraceptive pills do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Hope this helps.

Thanks and regards.
