Balke Treadmill Test:

Balke Treadmill Test utilizes the maximal oxygen uptake known as VO2 to determine the cardiovascular condition and its endurance. This fitness test is done at a slow pace to enable exercise in patients with cardiac and other illnesses.

Bruce Treadmill Test:

The Bruce Treadmill Test is the most customary used treadmill test. This is a pre-eminent tool utilized in assessing the level of cardiovascular diseases in heart patients. Thus, cardiovascular fitness can be well maintained with the help of this tool. This test is performed under the supervision of trained medical instructors in order to provide veracious guidance and management.

How is the Balke Treadmill Test undertaken?

Mentioned below are the steps to conduct the Balke Treadmill Test.

  • Initially, a 10-minute warmup is needed.
  • Now, let the person start walking on the treadmill. A 0% grade at 3.3 MPH is maintained in males and the same at 3.0 MPH is maintained for females.
  • Next, this grade is extended slowly to 2% in males after the first minute and then for each and every minute 1% is appended thereupon. But in females, only after three minutes, the grade is extended to 2.5%.
  • Finally, when it becomes unbearable for the person to continue, the test is ceased and the number of minutes the person was able to walk is entered.
  • Thus, the value per Balke Treadmill Test is achieved.

The formula applied in the Balke Treadmill Test is:

VO2 max = (1.444 * T) + 14.99 (in males)

T is multiplied with 1.444 and the result is added to 14.99 to give the VO2 Max value in males.

VO2 max = (1.38 * T) + 5.22 (in females)

T is multiplied with 1.38 and the result is added to 5.22 to give the VO2 Max value in females.

How is the Bruce Treadmill Test undertaken?

Mentioned below are the steps to conduct the Bruce Treadmill Test.

  • Initially, a 10-minute warmup is needed.
  • Now, let the person start running on the treadmill. A 10% grade at 1.7 mph (2.74 km/hr) is maintained.
  • Next, this slope is increased slowly to 2% in every three minutes.
  • Finally, when it becomes unbearable for the person to continue, the test is ceased and the number of minutes the person was able to run is entered.
  • Thus, the value per Bruce Treadmill Test is achieved.

The formula applied in the Bruce Treadmill Test is:

VO2 max = 14.8 - (1.379 * T) + (0.451 * T2) - (0.012 * T3) (in males)

VO2 max = (4.38 * T) - 3.9 (in females)

T is Total Duration of Running in minutes.
