The subspecialty that merges neurology and ophthalmology is known as neuro-ophthalmology. It deals with the manifestation of neurological diseases in the optic system. The eye is not an independent organ but an extension of the brain. Eyes send visual impulses to the brain and make the brain see and recognize images. As this needs coordination between the two organs, any disorder in either of them can involve the other organ. The common conditions that a neuro-ophthalmologist manages are optic neuritis, optic neuropathy, papilledema, brain tumors, stroke, diplopia, ophthalmoplegia, ptosis, nystagmus, seizures, etc. They usually focus on the diseases of the nervous system that affect the vision, eye movements, and pupillary reflexes.
