Anisocytosis refers to a medical condition having unequal-sized red blood cells. This condition is diagnosed using red blood cell distribution width (RDW). A high RDW indicates that the variation in the size of the red blood cells is higher than usual. Typically, RDW increases with age and is also seen in later stages of pregnancy and after physical exercise. The most common cause of anisocytosis is anemia, and other causes include cardiovascular disease, liver disease, kidney disease, and colorectal cancer.
