Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis is a severe infectious disease of the gingiva. The symptoms mainly include pain, bleeding, excessive salivation, and halitosis. It is more commonly seen in smokers. Immunocompromised patients such as those suffering from acute immunodeficiency syndrome are at high risk. The treatment is ultrasonic scaling, debridement, maintenance of oral hygiene, and use of oral antibiotics.
