Basilar invagination is a congenital (birth defect) or acquired cranio-cervical abnormality in which the floor of the skull at the foramen magnum has developed so that the superior portion of the cervical spine is further towards the head, restricting the foramen magnum opening. Basilar invagination is also known as a basilar impression.
