Carcinoid syndrome occurs in the advanced stages of carcinoid tumor, a neuroendocrine tumor frequently affecting the lungs and gastrointestinal organs. Based on the different chemicals that the carcinoid tumor secretes in the bloodstream, the signs and symptoms of carcinoid syndrome vary. Common signs and symptoms include rapid heartbeat, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, purplish spider-like veins over the face, and episodic facial flushing.
