When the skin is exposed to cold temperatures, chilblains develop. Most commonly, body extremities like fingers, nose, earlobes, and toes are affected and are characterized by sore areas that appear red and itchy with swelling. Though they go back on their own, in extreme conditions, they persist needing medical intervention. Preventing being outside in cold temperatures and covering oneself with scarfs, mufflers, sweaters, socks, and gloves can prevent its occurrence.
