Diaphragmatic injuries or rupture most commonly occur due to penetrating injuries like gunshots and stabbing, and blunt injuries like road accidents traumatizing the thoracoabdominal region with a predilection to the left diaphragm due to the protective function of the liver on the right side. A rise in intra-abdominal pressure causes its rupture. If left undiagnosed, it can progressively lead to the herniation of abdominal contents into the chest cavity. In such cases, patients present with nausea, vomiting, and dyspnea. Over time it may lead to perforation, sepsis, strangulation, visceral rupture, and worsening of respiratory functions if left undiagnosed. Repair of visceral herniation through a laparoscopy or laparotomy is necessitated.
