Medical Conditions - Embolization

Embolization is an invasive surgical procedure used to block blood vessels supplying blood to the affected area. It is usually recommended in cases of brain aneurysms, uterine fibroids, arteriovenous malformations, and excessive nosebleeding. It can be done as a single treatment or before surgery to prevent blood flow to the affected region. An incision is made in the groin area in this procedure, and a catheter is inserted through a femoral artery. The catheter is guided through an x-ray, and after reaching the damaged region, materials like glue, tiny plastic particles, foam, metal foils, and surgical balloons can be placed. The risks of embolization are damage in the blood vessels, bleeding at the puncture site, and infection.
