Hairy tongue is a condition where there is an abnormal coating on the tongue due to the absence of shedding of filiform papillae. This results in a dark appearance on the tongue. It is usually caused due to poor oral hygiene, certain medications, tobacco chewing, and dry mouth. It is usually temporary and harmless. Brushing the tongue and maintenance of proper oral hygiene helps to reduce it.
