When the prolactin levels are higher than normal in the blood, it is called hyperprolactinemia. Prolactin is high during breastfeeding, and it affects the levels of both male and female sex hormones. Hyperprolactinemia is caused due to hypothyroidism, tumor of the pituitary gland, chronic liver and kidney disease, and some medicines.
