Ice pick headaches are a rare type of headache in which there are sudden episodes of sharp and stabbing headaches that starts unexpectedly and lasts for a few seconds. Ice pick headaches are thought to occur due to malfunctioning of the central pain control mechanism of the brain. The treatment of these headaches includes taking regular headache medicines. Melatonin used to decrease migraine frequency, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to stop the pain when it occurs.
