The procedure of retrieving a small piece of liver tissue to diagnose the cause of enlarged liver, prolonged abnormal liver enzyme levels, chronic jaundice, alcoholic liver disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver, primary biliary cirrhosis, etc., is known as liver biopsy test. The risk of internal bleeding is present. A needle can be directly inserted into the abdomen (percutaneous), or a small incision on the stomach can be made, and tissue can be retrieved laparoscopically, or a thin tube can be introduced into the jugular vein through a neck incision, and liver tissue can be retrieved.
