Long-acting insulins or basal or background insulins work to keep the blood glucose levels under control throughout the day. These are injected only once daily at the same time of the day. Pain at the injection site, swelling, redness, and hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level) are the possible side effects of long-acting insulin.
