Nasotracheal intubation is done to induce anesthesia and secure the upper airway while performing surgeries on the head and neck. It is contraindicated in patients having frequent episodes of epistaxis, large nasal polyps, and advanced upper airway obstruction. Complications of nasotracheal intubation include damage to the nasal cavity and vocal cords.
