Optic atrophy is the death of retinal cells that comprises the optic nerve. As a result, in fundoscopy, the optic nerve appears as pale. Optic atrophy is the final stage in the myriad causes of optic nerve damage in the pathway from the retina to the lateral geniculate. One of the most common causes of optic nerve atrophy is poor blood flow.
