Foramen ovale is a small opening in the septum that divides the left and right atrium. This foramen helps in the movement of blood from the right atrium to the left atrium in the fetus before birth. The opening closes from 6 to 24 months after birth. In certain situations, this foramen does not close, and it is known as patent foramen ovale. They increase the risk of ischemic heart attack, stroke and might cause a migraine headache.
