The pneumococcal vaccine is given to prevent pneumococcal disease caused by Streptococcus pneumonia bacteria, which is available in two kinds: pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine is given for all children below the age of two years. Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine is provided for people above the age of 65 years, people between the age group of 2 to 64 years with medical conditions, and those who smoke cigarettes.
