Pneumothorax refers to the abnormal entrapment of air in the space around the lungs. The lungs are protected by two layers of outer membranes called pleura. And the space between these two membranes is called pleural space. When pleural space gets punctured from trauma or gets affected by lung disease, it fills up with air and compresses the lungs from outside. With pneumothorax, the lungs may collapse and cause severe chest pain and shortness of breath.
