Medical Conditions - Portal Hypertension

When the blood that flows through the portal vein exerts more pressure on the blood vessel walls, it is called portal hypertension. The portal vein carries blood to the liver from the stomach and other digestive organs. The rise in pressure is usually due to a blockage in the vein. The other causes include liver cirrhosis or scarring, hepatitis, and alcohol abuse.
