It is a common complication of shingles (also known as herpes zoster). Shingles cause blister rashes which are painful and occur in a band pattern. It is called postherpetic neuralgia if the rash goes away and the pain remains. It can last for weeks, months, or years. The pain can be very severe, which may impact daily activities. In addition, the affected area may burn, have numbness, and itching that can be aggravated by extreme cold or hot temperatures.
