Priapism is an erection that does occur without any sexual stimuli and is painful, persistent, lasting for more than four hours. It occurs in men in the age group of 5 to 10 and 20 to 50. Sickle cell anemia, spinal trauma, trauma to the genitals, carbon monoxide poisoning, marijuana and cocaine drug addiction, black widow spider bites, and intake of medications like Desyrel and Thorazine result in priapism.
