Prion disease is a group of conditions that get triggered by a prion, which is a type of normal protein in the brain that has folded abnormally. The symptoms include rapidly progressing dementia, problems with gait, hallucinations, confusion, fatigue, and problems with speech. The common types of prion disease are Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), variably protease-sensitive prionopathy (VPSPr), and Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease (GSS).
