A retracted nipple is a congenital condition, where the nipple is tucked below the skin’s surface and turns inwards rather than outward. Such nipples are also known as inverted nipples. Inverted nipples occur either as a developmental defect since birth due to decreased length of the milk duct, or the mother can develop them after pregnancy owing to tissue loss. Nipple protrusion occurs with the stimulation, however, some inverted nipples can never protrude. The only drawback of an inverted nipple is difficult breastfeeding.
