Shingles is a Varicella-zoster viral infection that typically affects a single sensory nerve ganglion and causes pain in the skin surface supplied by the nerve. Symptoms include a dull, gnawing pain or a sharp stabbing pain, skin rashes, fluid-filled blisters specific to a particular area supplied by the nerve, fever, chills, fatigue, headache, etc. Antiviral medications, along with symptom relief, are the treatment for shingles.
