Sigmoid volvulus occurs when a section of the intestine twist around the blood supply. Most commonly seen in bedridden patients and those with chronic constipation. Symptoms include constipation, bloating, lower abdominal pain, and difficulty passing gas and stool. The initial treatment is a conservative nonoperative procedure followed by surgery.
