A bone marrow transplant is a medical treatment that supersedes the bone marrow with healthy cells to treat certain types of cancer. It is of two types: allogenic and autologous transplant. It is used for the treatment of leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Once the stem cells are invested into the patient’s bloodstream, they traverse to the bone marrow and commence the procedure of forming new, healthy blood cells comprising white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. This process is called “engraftment.”
