Can a woman get pregnant shortly after an abortion despite taking a contraceptive pill?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 20 years old I had an abortion 12 days ago. I had unprotected sex and he ejaculated inside me. I took contraceptive pill that same night around 12 hours later, I bled 6 days after taking the pill it was like my period. What are the chances of my pregnancy? Is it even possible to get pregnant so soon after an abortion?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Since you have taken an emergency contraceptive pill within 72 hours of intercourse then there is no chance of pregnancy. Also, you say that you had withdrawal bleeding, so you can be doubly sure that you are not pregnant. Yes, definitely plan B has worked because you had bleeding. However, if you have a doubt then get a blood test for pregnancy done to ensure that you are not pregnant after a week or 10 days. The delay could be because of hormonal changes due to the pill you have taken or because you already had withdrawal bleeding.

I hope it helps.
