Is it safe to use an MTP kit for abortion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 22 years old and was 35 days pregnant. I tested positive for pregnancy three days ago and then took an MTP kit. I followed the instructions by taking one tablet at a time. After 24 hours, I took Misoprostol orally, and 12 hours later, I took Misoprostol vaginally. I started bleeding on the first day, with moderate bleeding, but today the bleeding has decreased.

Does this indicate that the abortion was successful?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Since you were 35 days pregnant (about five weeks) and followed the MTP kit (Mifepristone + Misoprostol) instructions correctly, the moderate bleeding followed by lighter bleeding could suggest that the abortion is progressing as expected. However, the only way to confirm if the abortion was successful is through the following:

Signs of a successful abortion:

  1. Bleeding and passing clots: Moderate bleeding with clots or tissue in the first 24-48 hours is normal.

  2. Cramping and reduced symptoms: If the cramps you initially felt have eased, it is a good sign.

  3. Pregnancy symptoms fading: If symptoms like breast tenderness, nausea, or fatigue are diminishing, it suggests a drop in pregnancy hormones.

Signs that may indicate an incomplete abortion (require medical attention):

  1. Sudden stop of bleeding and persistent pregnancy symptoms: If the bleeding stops abruptly and you still feel pregnant, there may be retained tissue.

  2. Severe pain, fever, or foul-smelling discharge: These could indicate infection or retained tissue.

  3. Light bleeding for an extended period: If bleeding has remained light throughout, the abortion may not be complete.

Next steps:

It is important to follow up with your healthcare provider to confirm the abortion's success and ensure there are no complications. They may perform an ultrasound or other tests to check for retained tissue or any issues.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
