Could I have issues after swallowing a few fabric pieces?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have a bad habit of chewing on my shirts. While doing this, I accidentally swallowed a few small pieces of fabric. I am very nervous now and worried that it might cause problems.
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand that you feel very anxious after swallowing something that is not meant to be eaten, especially a non-edible item like fabric. However, in most cases, this situation does not lead to serious health problems. Shirt fabric is commonly made from cotton or cotton blends, which are generally non-toxic materials. If the pieces you swallowed were small, they are unlikely to cause harm and should pass naturally through your digestive tract without difficulty.
It is common to feel mild throat or stomach irritation after swallowing fabric. This irritation is usually caused by the texture of the material and should gradually improve within 24 hours. Drinking adequate water and eating soft, easily digestible foods may help reduce discomfort.
Serious complications such as intestinal blockage are very rare when the swallowed pieces are tiny. That said, it is important to remain alert for warning signs. If you experience persistent nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, abdominal swelling, or difficulty passing stools, you should seek medical attention promptly for a proper physical evaluation.
If the swallowed pieces were very small, the likelihood of developing these symptoms is low. Most people in similar situations do not experience any complications.
Finally, to avoid future anxiety or health concerns, it would be best to consciously work on stopping the habit of chewing on your shirt. If the habit is linked to stress or anxiety, addressing the underlying cause may help.
I hope this has helped you.
