Why do I have a persistent cold despite taking medications?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I always seem to have a cold, and it never really goes away. I am 55 years old, and I have had this problem for a long time. Is it possible that my cold is related to uncontrolled asthma? I do not have asthma, but I wonder if it is something I should check for. I also do not understand why I get sick so often and whether my age has something to do with it. Could having asthma cause me to catch colds so easily, or is there something else going on? I take medication for my cold, but it does not seem to work well. Could asthma cause these symptoms without me even realizing it? I do not know if I should ask my doctor about uncontrolled asthma, but I am tired of always being sick.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

As per your history, you seem to be suffering from allergic rhinitis. If your symptoms are not associated with a history of shortness of breath or wheezing, then it is unlikely to be asthma. Allergic rhinitis is a form of allergy that involves the nose and throat.

I suggest undergoing the following tests:

  1. Complete blood count with absolute eosinophil count.
  2. Chest X-ray.
  3. X-ray of the paranasal sinuses.
  4. Pulmonary function testing (PFT) is especially useful if you are having complaints of breathlessness.

The treatment includes:

  1. Steam inhalation twice daily for 10 days.
  2. Warm saline gargles twice daily for 10 days.
  3. Fluticasone nasal spray, one spray in each nostril twice daily for one month. The nasal spray should be used for a few months to allow the underlying inflammation to resolve and provide prolonged relief.
  4. Tablet Fexofenadine 120 mg, one tablet before sleeping at night for 10 days.

Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him/her and take the medicines with their consent. Please get back to me with the details, and I will do my best to assist you.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
