Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am getting worried about my grandfather, who lives in a cold climate country, and he is starting to show some early signs of Alzheimer’s. We are in the process of getting him diagnosed. I have read a bit about tau protein and how it is related to Alzheimer’s and other brain issues. Could you explain how things like tau protein, oxidative stress, and lipid droplets might be playing a role in what he is experiencing?
I just want to understand what might be happening and what we can do to help him.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query.
It is understandable to be concerned about your grandfather's health, as he shows early signs of Alzheimer's.
Abnormally hyperphosphorylated tau protein in Alzheimer's disease leads to the intracellular accumulation of neurofibrillary tangles. These tangles interfere with the normal functioning of the cell and are associated with neurodegeneration.
The imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants is the cause of oxidative stress that can also result in brain cell damage, exacerbating the disease process. Other contributing factors may also include the lipid droplets storing fats in every cell that are found to accrue even in neurons, further contributing to metabolic dysfunction.
Anyway, to support your grandfather, make sure he gets a thorough check-up with his health provider. Foster a healthy lifestyle, which will include a healthy diet, regular exercise, mental stimulation, and social engagement, that will help manage symptoms and possibly slow down the progression. The same could be reinforced with local Alzheimer's organizations for much-needed resources for both caregivers and families.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
