What foods must be avoided with anticoagulants?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a question about my dad’s medication. My father is 70 now and has been on anticoagulant medicine, specifically Warfarin, ever since he had a thrombosis and a stroke-like episode. I have heard that people on Warfarin should not eat certain foods like leafy vegetables. Is that true? How does it affect him?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Your concern is valid. Warfarin is a medication that helps prevent blood clots, and its effectiveness can be influenced by diet. One key thing to watch for is foods high in vitamin K, like leafy greens (spinach, kale, broccoli, etc.), because vitamin K plays a crucial role in blood clotting. When someone is on Warfarin, their diet needs to be consistent with vitamin K intake. If your dad suddenly starts eating a lot of foods rich in vitamin K or suddenly stops eating them, it can affect how well Warfarin works. This is because Warfarin works by interfering with vitamin K’s role in clotting, so a large change in vitamin K levels can make Warfarin less effective or increase the risk of bleeding. It is not that he needs to avoid these foods completely, but rather maintain a consistent level in his diet. So, if he enjoys leafy greens, he can still eat them, but he should try to keep his intake steady and discuss any significant dietary changes with his healthcare provider. It might be a good idea for him to keep track of what he eats and regularly check in with his doctor or a dietitian to ensure everything is balanced. They can help him navigate his diet while managing his medication effectively.

I hope this helps.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Take care.

Thank you.
