Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 15-year-old daughter has an allergy, which sometimes worsens. When this happens, she begins coughing with phlegm, followed by wheezing, a dry cough, and difficulty breathing, which tends to worsen at night. During the day, she is generally fine with only slight coughing. She also expels thick phlegm and receives nebulizations. Additionally, she has a history of asthma attacks. Could you please provide guidance on how to manage her asthma more effectively?
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Start by identifying and avoiding potential triggers, such as dust, pollen, pet dander, or cold air, if any are suspected.
Ensure that her living environment is clean, free of allergens, and well-ventilated.
For symptoms, rescue inhalers containing a short-acting bronchodilator, such as Albuterol, can provide quick relief from wheezing and difficulty breathing.
If she experiences symptoms at night, consider using a long-acting bronchodilator or a low-dose inhaled corticosteroid for better control during the night.
Make sure she uses her nebulizer as prescribed to keep her airways clear.
Thick phlegm may result from inflammation. She needs to drink adequate amounts of lukewarm water to help thin the phlegm.
You may also consider using syrups that contain expectorants, such as Ambroxol.
Ensure her diet is rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, and omega-3-rich fish, which can support overall respiratory health.
Regular follow-up with her doctor is important to assess lung function and adjust medications as needed.
Breathing exercises can also be beneficial.
I hope this information helps you.
Please reach out if you have any questions.
Thank you.
