Do asthmatics in their 30s need a pneumococcal vaccine?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got asthma and sinusitis earlier, and now I am told I have bacteremia. I am a 33-year-old, and all the time, I feel extreme weakness in my body. Recent blood culture reports reveal positive gram-positive cocci. What is it? Also, my asthma test score is 15/25. There is constant pain and drainage due to sinusitis. I have a pneumococcal infection risk because of my current health condition. I am currently taking antibiotics and inhaled corticosteroids. Will this treatment help me in my recovery, or do I need to take some additional treatment? Is vaccination required? Also, tell me about complications, if there are any, because of my condition.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

You are asthmatic along with sinusitis. There is an intrinsic pulmonary problem that makes you prune for infection either by bacteria, viruses, or other infectious agents, and the infection itself will trigger an asthma attack and worsening of the condition. For asthma and sinusitis, you have to stick to strict precautions.

Avoid allergens such as dust, smoke, cold, etc. In addition to that, you have to take flu vaccines yearly before the winter season as flu can be worse with previously intrinsic lung disease. For now, keep taking antibiotics until you recover, along with asthma treatment. If you are satisfied with my answer, please kindly give me your feedback.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
