Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My family and I recently traveled to southern India and engaged ourselves in the traditional food, which included duck and chicken dishes. But now that we are back home, I am hearing about the avian influenza outbreak. Should we freak out? I must admit that the prospect of becoming ill as a result of something we ate on vacation causes me great concern. I mean, nobody has time for avian flu, right? It is been on my mind ever since I learned about the outbreak. Should we be concerned about becoming sick from the meals we ate while away? And if so, what signs should we be looking for?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I just read your query. I can understand your concern.
It is understandable to feel concerned about potential health risks, especially given the recent avian influenza outbreak and your recent trip where you indulged in local cuisines, including duck and chicken dishes. However, it is essential to approach this situation with a level head and take appropriate precautions. Firstly, it is important to note that avian influenza, or bird flu, is primarily spread through direct contact with infected birds or their droppings rather than through properly cooked poultry or eggs. Cooking poultry to the recommended internal temperature kills the virus, so the risk of contracting avian influenza from properly cooked food is low. That being said, if you or your family members develop symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, or difficulty breathing after returning from your trip, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly to see if the symptoms are from avian influenza. While these symptoms can be indicative of various respiratory illnesses, including avian influenza, they can also be caused by more common viruses, such as the flu or a cold.
If you are concerned about your potential exposure to avian influenza during your trip, it is a good idea to monitor your health closely and practice good hygiene habits such as regular handwashing.
Ultimately, while it is natural to feel anxious about potential health risks, it is important to focus on taking practical steps to protect your health and well-being.
Please let me know if you want some help.
Thank you.
Regards.
