Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My two-year-10-month-old baby is not interested in eating anything. We have to feed him everything forcefully, which is quite disheartening. Kindly suggest ways to make him enjoy his meals and eat food on his own will. It has been the same since we started giving him solids.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
It is very common for toddlers around two to three years of age to go through a phase of reduced appetite or become picky eaters. However, it can be emotionally exhausting and worrisome for parents.
To answer your question, your two-year-10-month-old baby is not interested in eating. What can you do? It is not just your kid. Many toddlers show disinterest in food around this age. But force-feeding often creates a negative association with food.
So a gentle, child-friendly approach can make mealtimes more enjoyable. For that, you have to understand the “why." Because growth slows down at this age, appetite may naturally decrease. They are asserting independence; saying "no" is part of growing up. Sometimes toddlers eat better when they are more in control.
I suggest you few mindful tips to encourage your toddler to eat without pressure:
1. Make a mealtime routine by fixing meal and snack timings. Try to avoid grazing on milk, juice, or snacks between meals.
2. Present food in shapes, colors, or themes (for example, smiley faces, animal-shaped cutlets). Allow your child to help you in simple ways, like sprinkling cheese or stirring.
3. Start with very small portions or child-sized portions. Praise them for trying even one bite, and do not push to finish everything.
4. Children mimic adults. Sit and eat with them, even if it is just a bite. No distractions like screens, focus on family time.
5. Offer two to three healthy options. Let them pick. This gives a sense of control over food.
I hope you find this helpful.
Thank you.
