How often should a 2-month-old baby poop?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My two-month and five-day-old baby has not pooped yet today. What could be the reason? I would like to know the cause.

Current medication details:

  1. Nasal drops: 1 drop in each nostril.

  2. Levolin syrup: 1 mg, 2.5 ml.

  3. Vitamin D3: 0.5 ml for bronchiolitis.

Could you please provide some insight?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

As per the limited information, one day of constipation can occur for many reasons. Is your baby breastfeeding or on formula milk? Formula feeds usually tend to cause constipation in babies.

Since she is on medication, she may not be feeling well, and may not be taking sufficient feeds during illness. Lovolin (Levosalbutamol) can cause mild constipation.

If your baby is otherwise fine, active, feeding well, passing urine well, and not having any breathing difficulties, feed her properly and wait for the next 24 hours. If she still does not pass a motion, then use:

Glycerin pediatric suppository

  1. Insert one into the anus.

  2. If your baby has any other problems, please provide more details, share all the information, and connect with me.

I hope this information helps you, and please reach out if you have any doubts.

    Thank you.
