How effective is heat-based contraception?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am looking at doing heat-based contraception. I have been reading a lot of good things about it (regarding effectiveness and safety). Some are even in clinical trials. I am looking to do hot baths once a day for two weeks for 30 minutes each time, before a sexual encounter. I am about to have in two weeks. I am just wondering if using hot baths for 30 minutes a day at what temperature could cause testicular damage, if any? I am just double-checking for safety. I read 112 degrees Farenhiet is the top threshold for a hot tub. I want to lower my sperm count, but do not want to cause damage to my testicles.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. I do not know about the efficacy of the hot baths in reducing sperm count, as it is not standard advice or mentioned in any standard medical textbook. I would strongly advise against you doing this. There is a strong chance of you causing scalding burns to your scrotal skin.

The most effective way to prevent unwanted pregnancies is by using a condom (although nothing has a 100 % guarantee). The other thing you could do if you want to be extremely cautious is to pull out right before you are going to ejaculate. You could also ask your partner to use a female condom or diaphragm. Pulling out and using a condom are your best options.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at icliniq.

Thank you

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Can I have a normal hot bath daily? Other than sperm count, could this result in some sort of damage, like testosterone production slowing down or something? I am not talking about scalding water, I mean about a 102 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit, for over half an hour, or like a normal hot tub soak.

Kindly guide.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

A normal hot bath would not have any ill effects on your sperm counts or testosterone levels. On the contrary, they might increase the blood flow to the area for a short amount of time, which is always healthy. You can continue to have a normal hot bath whenever you feel like it.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
