Does gum affect birth control pill absorption?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a question about birth control. I was taking my birth control pill, and it got stuck to the gum I was chewing. I tried my best to remove it, but I ended up swallowing it with some gum still attached. Should I take another pill just to be safe?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system. But do not worry, I am here to take care of you. Thanks for checking in. This is a common situation, and here is what you need to know:

If you swallow your birth control pill even with gum on it, you do not need to take another pill.

Here is why:

  • As long as you swallow the pill, even if it is stuck to gum, it will still be absorbed in your stomach.

  • The presence of gum will not block the absorption of the hormones in the pill.

  • Taking an extra pill could increase side effects like nausea, spotting, or hormone overload, so it is better not to.

So, what to do:

  • Just continue taking your pills as usual.

  • Mark today as "pill taken" in your tracker.

  • Only take a replacement pill if you spit it out.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
