Can ORS cause bloating and discomfort?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I started taking ORS (oral rehydration solution) and Paracetamol (Tylenol) for fever and dehydration due to norovirus, but now I feel extremely bloated and uncomfortable. Could the ORS be causing this? Should I switch to something else? Also, what is the best way to stay hydrated without feeling so full and nauseous?

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

ORS (oral rehydration solution) can sometimes cause bloating and discomfort due to its electrolyte and sugar content, especially when consumed in large amounts. To stay hydrated without feeling too full or nauseous, try sipping fluids slowly, diluting ORS with water, or opting for alternatives like clear broths, herbal teas, or diluted fruit juices. Monitoring your intake and adjusting based on how your body responds can also help. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider for personalized advice. Feel free to book a consultation with me for further guidance.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any other concerns.

Thank you.
