Can O-negative and B-positive parents safely plan a baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My blood group is O negative, and my husband’s blood group is B positive. Is it a problem for our baby? I am so worried about it. What to do?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Firstly, I am assuming that this is going to be your very first pregnancy. I would like to briefly explain how blood grouping works. If the mother of the baby has a negative blood group and the father has a positive blood group, as in your case, it would not affect the firstborn child, but it may cause problems for the second child if you are planning for one.

Having said that, I would like to assure you that, usually, after the first child is born, you would be given an injection at the medical institution that would help prevent any problem for the second child or any further births. This injection works by protecting your body from forming antibodies that could affect a future pregnancy.

So, do not worry at all. You and your child will be totally safe, and you can go ahead with your plan. Wishing you a beautiful pregnancy and a wonderful journey into motherhood. Take care of your health, attend regular checkups, and follow your doctor’s advice throughout this period.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.

If this is your first pregnancy

The first Rh-positive pregnancy in an Rh-negative mother is usually safe, because antibodies have not yet formed. The planning anxiety is often bigger than the typical clinical risk for baby number one. The protective steps your healthcare provider follows during and after this pregnancy are what keep future pregnancies safe too.
