How to control underarms smell if BPO fails?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I sweat a lot and my underarms smell bad even hours after showering.

I have been using the Bebodywise 2.5 % benzoyl peroxide wash for two weeks, and it has not made much of a difference. I have been leaving it on for one to two minutes every day and then washing it off.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am very sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system.

But do not worry, I am here to take care of you, and thanks for explaining your routine. I understand how frustrating persistent underarm odor can be.

Let us go through this step by step:

  • Bacteria on the skin (especially Corynebacterium species) break down sweat that leads to odor.

  • Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) wash helps reduce bacteria, but a one to two-minute contact time may not be enough.

  • Odor can also come from sweat trapped in hair, clothing fabrics, or diet.

So I will advise you to try the following practice

  • Optimize your BPO routine. Try leaving the wash on for three to five minutes before rinsing. Use it daily, but if irritation develops, reduce frequency. Make sure you apply to dry skin before the shower water wets the area.

  • Alternative antibacterial options:

  1. Chlorhexidine wash a few times per week.

  2. Topical Clindamycin gel or solution (prescription) can be very effective.

  3. Diluted apple cider vinegar or witch hazel (natural antibacterial, but test a small area first).

Reply to me if you have more concerns or questions by scheduling a direct appointment or follow-up via chat, phone, or video consultation. Thanks for using icliniq, and have a nice day.

I hope this answers your query.

Thank you.
