Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, and doctors found a BRCA genetic mutation. Now I am freaking out. I am 28 and scared I might have the gene too. Our family history is intense my grandma died from it, and now my mom survived. I did some research and found out about genetic testing. Should I get tested? I am worried about having children someday. My boyfriend thinks I am overreacting, but I can not stop thinking about my risk. What tests should I do, and how can I protect myself?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
If you have a family history of breast cancer, it is essential to consult a breast surgeon and begin a comprehensive screening for breast, cervical, and ovarian cancers.
Breast screening: A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that helps detect cancer early when it is easier to treat. Regular mammograms can reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer, and they are recommended for women of screening age. You should plan regular screenings with a breast surgeon and follow up accordingly.
Cervical screening: The Pap smear is the test to screen for cervical cancer. Start screening at age 24, with follow-ups every few years depending on age. Women aged 65 and older should follow specific guidelines.
Ovarian cancer screening: For women over 45, a transvaginal ultrasound is recommended. Consult a gynecologist for guidance on proper screening and follow-up. By following proper screenings, early detection is possible, preventing complications.
