Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 42-year-old sister is recovering from a lumpectomy for breast cancer, but she is struggling to decide between chemotherapy and hormone blockers, which her oncologist suggested.
Are there cases where hormone blockers alone would be effective instead of chemotherapy? She recently noticed a strange discharge from her left breast.
Could this indicate that the cancer was not fully removed? She is hesitant about follow-ups due to the costs of additional treatments.
What are the best options to ensure she stays safe without overwhelming her financially?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Hormone blockers like Tamoxifen or Aromatase Inhibitors may be sufficient in the following cases:
The cancer is hormone receptor-positive (estrogen receptor positive / progesterone receptor positive).
The tumor was small and had no lymph node involvement.
Genetic testing (Oncotype Diagnosis (DX) or Mammaprint) shows a low risk of recurrence.
However, if the cancer is aggressive, Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2)-positive, or involves lymph nodes, chemotherapy is a better option to reduce the risk of recurrence. It is best to discuss her recurrence risk score or genetic testing results with her oncologist.
Regarding the breast discharge:
