Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have a concern about my mother, who is nearing her 60s. My grandmother had breast cancer, and I am worried if it is there in our genes. Is there any test to know this? Also, I heard there are some medicines like Anastrozole to prevent this type of cancer. Is it advisable to take those precautionary measures? How to be vigilant on this matter?
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern. Almost 10 percent of breast cancers are hereditary and run in families. I would suggest doing a BRCA (breast cancer gene) 1 and BRCA 2 test for your mother. In case she is positive, then all your siblings, including you, have to do this test also. If anyone is positive, then there are different screening and cancer prevention treatments. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and mammography are the best screening tools. Anastrazole can not prevent breast cancer in many cases, but there are many other options available.
I hope this helps you.
