Why is my cousin having bleeding issues post-cancer surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My cousin had surgery to remove one of her breasts because of triple-negative breast cancer. She is still recovering, and we are trying to understand what this type of cancer means. After the surgery, she seems to have some issues with bleeding, and I am worried it could be hemophilia.

  1. Is triple-negative breast cancer different from other types?
  2. Can having triple-negative breast cancer make bleeding problems worse?
  3. Should we be concerned about hemophilia in her case?
  4. What steps should we take to manage her recovery with these concerns?
  5. Is there anything specific we should look out for after her surgery?
  6. How can we make sure she is getting the right care for both her cancer and possible bleeding issues?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Triple-negative Breast cancer is an aggressive form of breast cancer. Also, it has a high recurrence rate compared with hormone-positive breast cancers. Triple-negative breast cancers are usually not linked with any kind of bleeding disorder or hemophilia.

In case she has received chemotherapy before surgery, that can sometimes lead to low platelets for a longer time and cause bleeding. If you can send her all the reports, I will be able to tell you about her stage and prognosis and the cause of the bleeding.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
