How do I manage my 2-year-old toddler with burn scars?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Can you suggest a good ointment for a two-year-old with burn scars? The wound is not open and has healed well, but I need an ointment to reduce the scar or burn mark.
Please suggest.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Based on the picture (the attachments were removed to protect the patient's identity), the burn wound has healed completely. What is visible now is a post-burn scar or mark. There are no signs of an open wound, infection, or active inflammation, which is reassuring.
For a two-year-old child, only gentle, pediatric-safe products should be used. The following options are considered safe when used as directed:
-
Silicone-based scar gels (safe for children when applied to healed skin).
-
If silicone gel is not available or if the child’s skin is sensitive, simple emollients can be used, like petroleum jelly.
How to use:
-
Apply a thin layer over the scar once daily.
-
Gently massage for one to two minutes.
-
Use regularly for at least two to three months to see visible improvement.
Don'ts
-
Do not use steroid creams, fairness creams, or herbal products.Avoid excessive sun exposure to the area, as sunlight can darken scars.
-
Scar improvement in children is gradual and often improves with time.
These creams are pediatric-safe when used only on healed skin and in the recommended amount. If the scar becomes raised, very thick, itchy, or starts increasing in size, further medical evaluation may be needed.
I hope this has helped you.
